I'm re-vamping my blog and have changed the address. Please continue to visit me at JRD Studio. The reason for the change is simple- in an attempt to streamline all that I have going on... and trying out the idea of a "clean slate" I've moved to this new blog as a way of documenting all the inspires me & the behind the scenes look at my new home line; J. Ritter Designs. They'll be some of the same- food reviews, awesome art & design & handy tips... and also some new "columns" and "features". Hope you all continue to enjoy & comment!

Best,
Jessica

I've been a busy bee {sort of!}

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_EhTLxS7bW8s/Rl17I5UCyOI/AAAAAAAAAL8/atQR6X1O6yw/s400/Indie" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5070344148243106018" />
I realized that my goal of a post a day was quickly slipping away from me. Sometimes I wonder where the time goes... I've been busy in my studio printing some new pillows for the Ice Craft Fair that I am participating in this weekend. In my post about it awhile ago I thought it would be a great place to go & check out fellow designers in this area... wouldn't you know- even though the deadline passed way before I moved down here the nice girls running the show found a place to squeeze me in! A BIG THANKS TO THEM! Cross your fingers for great weather & lots of people in the mood to shop! I'll try to give sneak peak of what I am going to sell, but in typical Jess fashion- the goods will be done about 24 hours prior to the show! Yikes! {I work best under pressure!}

{so where does the "sort of" fit in you ask...} Well, Saturday Night was a really fun BBQ at C&K's where I watched the Ultimate Fight Lidell v. Quinton “Rampage” Jackson - totally wild experience. Sunday G&I went to Turner Field to see Atlanta v. Philadelphia. {Phillies Won!!!} And, finally Monday {though I did clock a few AM hours} I then hung out poolside for a few hours with K&C&L followed by a BBQ and Redsox game {on tv.} All in all- an awesome Memorial Day Weekend...

Back to the grind...

Check Her Out: Kitty Genius

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_EhTLxS7bW8s/RlL20pUCyKI/AAAAAAAAALc/dEEx4sZn-28/s400/img_3252.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5067383915048781986" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_EhTLxS7bW8s/RlL21ZUCyLI/AAAAAAAAALk/XxnWenfOYSE/s400/img_3258.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5067383927933683890" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_EhTLxS7bW8s/RlL215UCyMI/AAAAAAAAALs/NsqDpo0iKHE/s400/img_3261.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5067383936523618498" />
Kitty Genius aka Ashley Goldberg posted some new work on her blog a few days ago that I really responded to... something about pigs & cows with cute faces... The disc is split in to 2 half hour workouts- arms & abs and legs & abs and then a short quickie workout for the days you have little or no time. I've been practicing yoga & doing these "workout DVD's" since I moved down here because I haven't figured out a gym or yoga studio situation. Once you get past that "I'm working out in my living room" feeling it's actually not so bad... When all is said & done I'll have a fully functional screen print studio with printing for both textile & works on paper! Round one of construction took place without me. Greg built the two printing surfaces I had {nicely} requested. {Greg estimated his building material costs for the two tables are $125.} He built me a 4'W x 8'L x 30"H printing table for paper. This table is topped with white laminate {ensuring a completely smooth surface for printing.} The base/frame is built from 2 by 4's. I have not yet attached my hinge clamps... The second "mother" table is for printing on fabric. My instructions were a 4'W x 16'L x 30"H table but that the top could be cheap, plywood or whatever as it would be covered by foam & fabric... When I arrived he had used chipboard for the top surface which was great because the foam "stuck" to it! So, not only is it cheap- but highly recommended!

Here is a breakdown of the materials I bought:
I hit the local Joann Fabrics to find:
{Try to get a coupon- they always seem to be offering 40% off something...}

Foam or Batting - I opted for batting because it was on sale for $2.99/yd and it came 48" wide {exactly 4'- like my table.} The foam they had was $9.99 for a 24"W x 72"L piece... I decided that was too much $$ and too much piecing. Depending on where you shop you may find the foam is more reasonable... What you need is 1" thickness. The batting is about 1/2" {I bought 10oz batting} so I knew I would need to double it. There were large rolls of 15 yds of batting available- and since the price was right I decided to get the whole roll because I will need it in the future. TOTAL: $44.85

Duck Canvas - Make sure you get the canvas at least 60"W because you need to stretch it over your 4'W table and over the batting. My canvas cost $6.99/yd and I bought 6yds {18 ft} so I knew I would have some play room. You need to buy your canvas larger than your table so that you can stretch it & attach it over the batting/foam. Similar to stretching a canvas, my fingers definitely took a beating and I have 2 blisters to prove it! TOTAL: $41.94

Muslin - Just order the same amount that you determined you need for you canvas. The muslin gets stretched over the canvas... Mine was $2.99yd @ 6 yds. TOTAL: $17.94

TOTAL @ Joann's: $104.73 plus tax

The only other materials you need are a Staple Gun {I love mine!} and 1/2" staples. I bought the staples at Home Depot for $3.79 +tax.

Take a look at my pictures- e-mail me for more specific directions- but basically you want to lay the batting/foam down smoothly & staple along the edge every 12".

Then cover the table & batting/foam with the canvas by really pulling & stretching it taught. {You don't want any wrinkles or looseness.} I found it easiest to staple one side every 12" or so and one staple on each end of the table. Then, pull & stretch from the opposite side & staple every 12". Repeat on both sides & the ends until you have a staple every 4-6" and there are no more wrinkles! Neatly tuck the corners & you're ready to begin the muslin.

I used the same method for the muslin as I used for the canvas. {Staple one side every 12" and then pull & stretch from the opposite side.} I left these corners un-tucked & the sides longer to easily remove it. The reason we put the muslin on top of the canvas is to "catch" any ink that might bleed through the fabric you are printing. Muslin is relatively inexpensive & can be changed frequently to keep your surface fairly clean. The canvas should last at least 6mos - 1yr or longer depending on your use!

Lastly- I'm lucky to have such a large space to work in! But your tables don't need to be as big as mine. Just adjust your materials to fit your working space!

Great Source: Fabric.com

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_EhTLxS7bW8s/RkIBNd1ITGI/AAAAAAAAAJs/8dyA3UDlhA4/s400/FabricLogo.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5062610261975256162" />
In the midst of set-up studio mode... I took a break to do some much dreaded banking! To my surprise- the hour long meeting at SunTrust with Lauren was so great! Not only is she quite efficient at getting the banking set up for me personally and my biz but we chatted about common interests- one being- fabric... and wouldn't you know she mentioned Fabric.com {a company that I had already known to have great fabrics at great prices} is actually located about 10 minutes from my new abode! Now- they are a warehouse- so I can't pop in to browse, but she told me they have a warehouse sale 2 times a year {get on their mailing list} and I can pick my order up avoiding costly freight charges! One of the girls from my yoga studio who used to live in Atlanta recommended the Flying Biscuit to me for brunch. Greg & I checked it out on Sunday before a grueling day at Ikea trying to furnish our "too big for us" home on a serious budget. {More on that later this week!}
Amy was so right on! I had to get the Eggstra-Ordinary - 2 eggs, potatoes, grits and the signature Flying Biscuit with Apple Butter for $5.99! I was also tempted by their signature chicken sausage so I got a side of that. Greg opted for the Piedmont Omelet - three large farm fresh eggs with chicken sausage, turkey bacon, sauteed onions & cheddar cheese - again served with potatoes and a biscuit. We both got OJ and our bill was $17 and change. Maybe the south really is better!
Our wait time was the traditional 30 min at 10:30am on Sunday morning. But there were some cute things to window shop in the neighboring stores and the hostess parked out front of the place was fairly entertaining {read- hung-over & college aged!} The place is small- but has a really nice outdoor section & a bar for singles! Over all this place ranks high on my list of brunch places making me feel a bit more at home already.

View from Inside Philly Hearts Design

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_EhTLxS7bW8s/Rj8-T91ITBI/AAAAAAAAAJE/5dkBN5BnGzk/s400/PHD-blog.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5061833018923568146" />
Earlier I posted about Philly Hearts Design - a show of fresh new Philadelphia Designers that was hosted at the F.U.E.L. As of May 5th (or maybe the 6th depending on leave time & traffic!) I will be a resident of Atlanta, GA. Interestingly enough, I was actually born in Augusta, GA but only lived there a quick 6 mos. before moving to Delaware. I'm so excited. And- even more exciting is that I am moving into a house! Goodbye 600sq feet hello 3000 sq ft! So much wall space to work with- and my amazing boyfriend is letting me have free reign over all the wall-art decorating! This weekend I met up with my long-time friend Candice whom I have posted about a few times. She and I had been talking about trading since the last time we did we were in college! {Think '01!} I've always been enamored by her work. She was one of the first artists that I really looked up to. {Candice was getting her MFA in Painting from MCA while I was getting my BFA their in Printmaking.} I remember thinking to myself- this girl's work is amazing! Anyway- we made a trade & I got Bunny Love - a water colour and gouache on paper! Stay tuned- when I get down to ATL I'm going to frame it... I'm thinking a cool oval frame... I'll post again when it happens! Thanks Candice! I'm loving it!

Museum of Arts & Design

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_EhTLxS7bW8s/RhBJwlpekPI/AAAAAAAAAHU/jLZOdyvqsyw/s320/mayer_web2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5048616281370956018" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_EhTLxS7bW8s/RhBHcVpekOI/AAAAAAAAAHM/QALvXrzkShg/s320/Piper+Shepard.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5048613734455349474" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_EhTLxS7bW8s/RhBHV1pekNI/AAAAAAAAAHE/RZK1Lg-2Yao/s320/Hildur+Bjarnadottir.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5048613622786199762" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_EhTLxS7bW8s/RhBHJ1pekMI/AAAAAAAAAG8/haY6LEvSxE0/s320/Althea+Merback.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5048613416627769538" />
Radical Lace and Subversive Knitting

For those of you interested in anything textile or fashion related I highly suggest stopping by the MAD (Museum of Arts and Design) before June 17, 2007 to check out this exhibit that spans the 3 floors of this relatively small (in museum terms) space. I stumbled upon this exhibit by chance as I went to the MOMA (across the street) on Thursday to see the Jeff Wall Photographs and the Comic Abstraction Exhibit. (Both were great, but this "lace" exhibit struck a cord with me...) It was great to see something other than a slick painting or a lit photo. Too bad I had to be in a "design" museum- but frankly, it doesn't matter- it's just great that this exhibit exists. And, it's only $9 for admission ($7/students) as opposed to the daunting $20 you'll pay at the MOMA. Anyway, you weren't allowed photographs- and they only had a few on their site for me to post here. So, if you can't make it in person- there is a catalog. I looked for it on Amazon- but to no avail. Now I'm mad I didn't buy it at the museum. Ugh. I'll have to return there! If you can't make it there is a note that you can order it via phone at 212-956-3535 ext 157. I looked through it- it's worth it. I think it was in the $40 range.

The work ranged from traditional lace work, to intense installation. Sheila Pepe has a pretty interesting "lace" made from a lot of man-made, non-delicate materials. And Edward Mayer's installation that spanned all 3 floors was a beautiful testament to the color white- a color most often associated with all things lace and subtle. He used furniture, string, wood anything he could get his hands on to weave an intricate, beautiful work of art. The pic I have included for him is of Drawing In, 2006 at the Schick Art Gallery at Skidmore College. She is a fashion designer (left oh-so-corporate GAP recently to pursue Float) and I (as most of you know) am a fine-artist/designer. Together we came up with Float- which features hand designed prints with stylish yet functional silhouettes all made with the most luxurious of fabrics! We had a great response at Magic- which is the craziest thing I have ever been to! It was an overload of amazing (and not-so amazing) apparel and accessories! Sorry, you're not allowed to take pics or I'd post them here- but the above is our own booth. Anyway, that is the latest update in my world. Our site will be e-commerce friendly by the start of April- think shop, shop, shop!

Love it?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_EhTLxS7bW8s/RcsYH-FA8xI/AAAAAAAAAFI/7RW7TTK6bR8/s400/fruit.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5029139934091473682" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_EhTLxS7bW8s/RcsXE-FA8wI/AAAAAAAAAFA/US2ICoU7HMw/s400/buttons.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5029138783040238338" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;"src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_EhTLxS7bW8s/RcsWQ-FA8vI/AAAAAAAAAE4/ybEkpGB0FzY/s400/bunnies.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5029137889687040754" />
Well, it's almost that day. I was in Atlanta this past weekend (again, for those of you who read often!) Now- does this sound familiar to anyone... my BF forgot to mention that he had planned a dinner with his business partner & a couple other friends for one night that I was visiting and that we had a baby christening to attend... In fact, his exact words to me on the phone were "pack light, jeans, T's and sneakers as we will be staying in and ordering pizza and movies this weekend... (we're on a budget...) So, I arrive, with one small bag, a few T's and long sleeve cotton shirts and some pink puma sneakers... completely not appropriate for aforementioned events! So... shopping we must go! (so much for the budget!) He took me to Lenox Square - tres chic!
Of course there was an Anthropologie!
and of course I found a million options to go with there! I settled on a great blouse by Yumi Kim. I love, love, love it! Her prints are great! "inspired by vintage prints & silhouettes...with a touch of funk and urban femininity!"
This picture doesn't do it justice! The strips on the V-neck are also along the bottom of the blouse! Great pinks and golds! I highly suggest checking her out!

Ps... How about that intense salad we ordered! It had grilled apples, shrimp, tons of veggies and mixed greens with a great vinaigrette! So good!

Friends

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_EhTLxS7bW8s/Rbi9PJOAe9I/AAAAAAAAADk/q-pEpZvYot8/s400/legsonawall.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5023973452202146770" />
legs on a wall- do this, everyday- give those feet a break!

This is my Horoscope for today, Thursday, January 25, 2007.
It's time to splurge. That doesn't mean putting your credit card through the wringer or playing hooky on all your duties. Why not indulge in the ultimate luxury and give yourself some much-needed time off?

This is actually very similar to something that we talk about at PPY (the yoga studio I teach at.) We teach a more physically intense style of Vinyasa Yoga in a heated room. Sometimes I noticed my students (and myself) pushing themselves past their own edge and into a grey area of discomfort and competition. It's times like this that I may remind the class that sometimes in life, it's actually more difficult to give yourself a break than it is to continue to push yourself past your edge. Especially if you're in a group class, no one wants to be the first person to drop into Child's Pose, no one wants to be the one who steps outside the room for nice breath of fresh, cold air. But, if you can let go of your ego, give yourself a nice break, than you are actually practicing yoga. For the practice is not just the asana (pose) but also the mindset, the practice of letting go of habits, tendencies & ego.

So, give yourself a break. Step away from the computer, put down the homework, leave work and work and when you get home tonight, take five minutes before you turn on the t.v., get into a deep convo with your room mate or loved one, and give yourself the wonderful gift of a time out, a break. The resurgence of great pattern for the wall is so inspiring to me. I frequently ask Google to help me find great things on the internet and with no fail I was led to the site for Wallpaper News. A bi-monthly mag about all things wallpaper. It's a great site that offers not only fun images but great links to companies/products related to wallpaper. So I'm going to Atlanta, GA in 10 days. So I figured I should see what I can find out about the type of design going on there... I remembered that at Christmas, while I was in Western Massachusetts, I stopped into one of my favorite stores, Essentials, and saw some interesting stationary type things by scad (savannah college of art and design.) Wouldn't you know- their online shop is awesome! I really like they way their website is laid out. Above I have pictured a couple melamine plates, a really awesome jewelry designer and just about the cutest kids toys ever. So I went back home for Thanksgiving. Well, first I jet-setted to Boston to give a couple lectures on my work and put up my installation at the Mazmanian Gallery at Framingham University. Then I went home to mom's house for lots of good food and sleep! (Much deserved I'll admit!) While I was home I helped celebrate my brother's birthday (yikes!) and bumped into a bunch of people from highschool. They were all much better at remembering my name then I was of their's! So... here are some juicy images from things that inspired me or things that I did on my 9 day getaway...
I convinced my friend Leigh, who I stayed with in Boston, to let me "borrow" this great book - Designer's Guide to Japanses Patterns. Here are some of my favorites!

Shots from the installtion I did at the Mazmanian Gallery.

I'm Traveling

Hello All
I'm currently traveling. Both printmaking majors at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, Kevin & I bonded over things like nitric acid & gum arabic. Needless to say, our friendship is still going strong. He lives in Providence, RI where he attended RISD for graduate school. (He recieved his MFA in Printmaking in 2004.) Another interesting fact about Kevin- he's a twin.

Soft spoken, heart-felt and beautiful are my top three words for describing Kevin's work. Interestingly, I would use all three to describe him as well. I've always been jealous of Kevin's ability to work on such a large scale, (most of hs drawings are upwards of 7 feet!) and without a separate studio! A true artist, he sacrifices a little bit of living space for a place to keep drawing! I decided to go for a question & answer with Kev via the internet. I wish we still lived in the same town, or that we could hang out more often- but for now- the mighty mighty world wide web keeps our friendship going. (And the occasional cell phone call.) The work I have posted is all new- but you should check out his earlier work on his website.

BSD: What are you up to these days?
K: I have been trying to work on these drawings mostly, but I just had two new paintings in a benefit auction for AIDS care Ocean State, so I was spending a lot of time working on those.

BSD: Have you been looking at anything in particular that has been influencing your work lately?
K: Well I somewhat try to keep myself sheltered from what is going on in the art world; I don't look at too much stuff. Occasionally something will catch my eye, an artist named Jared Buckhiester who I think is really great, also Gregory Crewdson's and Justine Kurland's photographs are amazing.

BSD: What's the best piece of advice you have for people who have to work full-time to pay the bills & still find time to make artwork?
K: I guess that the best advice I have is especially for younger artists
just out of school, to not stop making work, and always find the time to get things done. Also find a job that you can draw at while your working.

BSD: Where do you make your work? Do you have a studio?
K: I don't currently have a studio; I live in a loft in South Providence
that has 13-foot ceilings, so I work here. Typically my drawings are quite large like 7' x 8' so I only work on one at a time, and also I am pretty neat about it so it doesn’t get in the way.

BSD: What was the last movie you saw? Book you read? Restaurant you went to? Music you bought?
K: The last movie that I saw was "Brick" with the little kid from "Third Rock From the Sun" which was great, best I have seen all year, (watch it, it’s amazing). Last book that I finished was "The Washington Story" by Adam Langer, it's a sequel to his first book "Crossing California". I have also been trying to read "Infinite Jest" by David Foster Wallace for about a year and a half on and off, maybe someday I'll finish it. I tend to gravitate to books and movies that have well developed characters and a strong and involved story being told. And hopefully they will make me feel like I'm 15 again. I just bought the new "Silversun Pickups" record called "carnavas". I also finally picked up Sigur Ros's newish record "Takk..."

BSD: Do you have any up-coming exhibitions?
K: I have a print in a group show of prints made at Kindling Letterpress at Gallery 193c (from Nov. 17 - Dec. 22, 193 Meserade Ave. Greenpoint Brooklyn.) I have also been working on a series of small drawings that I have been framing. Once I amass a enough of them, I am going to hang them in bathrooms of stores and restaurants around town.

BSD: How's the art scene in Providence? Anything cool we should check out?
K: The art scene here is so so, I wish that there was more opportunity here. I hear that the Wunderground show at the RISD museum is good but I have yet to go and see it.

BSD: Do you have any blogs you visit that we should know about? Or, other websites?
K: I just got internet access for the first time in two years, so I am kind of out of the loop.

BSD: What's your most vivid memory?
K: That's a good question I'll have to think about it. I tend to think
that I have a really good memory, or I just pay attention, so there is too many to list.

BSD: What's your medium of choice? Why? Color Palette? Why?
K: The Gloria 1985 series is all cut paper that I have made, with slight amounts of drawing, adhered to a large sheet of Japanese paper. I am really into rich bright colors, and more dreary dark colors, typically used in conjunction with each other. I enjoy the flatness of the paper and the control that i have over it, its like playing with stickers.

Image list:
Gloria 1985 @ Dew Art Gallery, New London CT July 2005

Gloria 1985: part 9
79" x 96" printed cut paper with drawing 2006

Gloria 1985: part 12
60" x 79" printed cut paper with drawing 2005

Smaller Moments @ Mazmanian Gallery, Framingham State College October 2005

Gloria 1985: part 8
79" x 96" printed cut paper with drawing 2006

Gloria 1985: oart 11
79" x 96" printed cut paper with drawing 2005

I'm really into text

So, I realized in the last couple of months, that a once enemy of mine (in the world of art that is) TEXT, is now- like my total best friend. I was once a firm believer that text should stay in the book or in the ad.
I have seen the light- text in art = amazing.

Check out these intelligent & humorous T's that one of my students made. They were hot items so they may be gone now. But, she's onto something here & is currently in the second stages of a similar project. Maybe she'll tell you where you can find her latest work. (These T's were put around the Tyler School of Art campus with the ever-popular "FREE" sign attached. Needless to say, they were snatched up in a hot second.) I, of course, chose the "Critique" Shirt. After all, that is what they pay me for. The "Ruler" T was a close second of mine, always battling out which small line is what!

Siobhan can be found at siobhan7@temple.edu. They were all from print houses- of course. Master Printers at your fingertips....
As you can see, color was what I was into this trip. Big, bold, beautiful color. I was also really drawn to technique. Those Ezawa prints- yea, those are AQUATINT ETCHINGS! Same goes for the Greenfiled-Sanders prints. Wow- I have a new found love for etching. The Steiger prints are Linocut with Photo Relief, the Milhazes' are Screenprint & Relief and the Opie's are screenprints as well. The next time you find yourself in conversation with someone- and it is not going smoothly, would you mind writing it down and sending it to me? I am compiling a bunch of scenarios where people feel that they are being mis-understood. I am interested in how words mean one thing in one tone of voice and a whole other thing in another tone. I am also interested in the use of e-mail and text messaging as a form of communication that involves no actual contact via voice or body between two (or more) people. If you feel as though you have one of those "communication" situations; pass it my way. Feel free to change names to keep the innocent protected! This will be on-going for awhile- so if nothing interesting happens for a few weeks- I can wait! Ideally you would e-mail me (jessicarit@gmail.com) these situations... other arrangements can also be made! Thanks so much! And, spread the word- your friends communication issues are also welcome!

image from Woody Allen's Manhattan

Special

To all of you who braved the crappy weather & the l-o-n-g drive out to Glassboro, NJ-
Thank You. I came across the Falling Cow Gallery whose window I had peered through a few months back as Candy Depew was installing her work. I never actually made it inside the gallery for that particular show- and then, due to an over-whelming amount of work I took on the past few months I am finally just now getting my butt over there. Which is fine with me because I caught a glimpse of a really great show. You'll have to be quick though- it's over tomorrow! Imagined Heritage features the work of Alana Bograd, Caroline Falby and Fay Ku. The surface quality, attention to detail and intimacy of all three artist's work is beyond satisfying. I suggest you add this place to your list of "places to see good art" here in Philly. Their next show looks equally as promising! I'll keep you posted.

image shown: Torch Girls drawing by Fay Ku

Two Times a Week- I wish....

Dirty minds; I'm referring to blogging. The past month has been a series of late nites at the studio finishing all the things I want to finish for my show. Though I'm exhausted, the last month has got my creative brain going in over-drive. Always one to take on too many projects at once- I had to sit down with myself last night and say- self, not every last idea needs to manifest itself for this show. Take it easy- do what you wanted to do & save the new ideas for things to come. It's hard- as an artist we constantly want to out-so ourselves before we have even finished the thing worth out-doing. It's important to spend time with your work & let it fester for awhile inside your head before you decide it's time to re-invent your idea again, even better. I somehow feel that it's this time- the 2000's, that make us jump from one thing to the next- always searching for something better, and never quite satisfied with what we have in front of us. It always has to be bigger, flashier, hipper than the next guys. The creative days are few and the competitive days are many. Internet searching of what is going on NOW, has replaced leisurely reading of historical events in the past. What are we all rushing for. Life is beautiful, but only if you take time to notice it- and take a moment to share it with someone. With that, I urge you all to go outside- it's freakin' beautiful today and then go rent Manhattan by Woody Allen. I watched it in the wee hours of this morning and it refreshed my attitude towards life. That man is nuts, and I love it!

image: sneak peak of decor(ate)
for more sneak peaks of my show check out my girl joy

Come One (Come All) and Bring Your Friends

It's that time.
My very own solo show at Rowan University. For wine I enjoyed a great Louis Latour Chardonnay that was on special, and also, from their list, a glass of Houghton Semillon / Sauvignon Blanc, 2005 from NWestern Australia. This is their description- and I loved it!

Very intense and lifted nose. Powerful gooseberry and fresh grassy aromas. fresh, citrusy, and tangy, but with an elegant depth and length of flavor.

While the wine was great, the atmosphere, the food & the exceptional service were really the big surprises of the night. While their regular menu wasn't all that exciting- duck salad, cheese plate, burger, steak, calamari etc... their specials were right on. I ended up going with Grilled Waloo! I had never heard of it either- but it is a really light, flakey white fish with a buttery undertone. It was served with garlicky greens & jasmine rice- only $17! The other thing that caught my eye was the Petite Filet & mashed for $19! My partner in crime had a Pan Seared Tuna dish over a great seaweed salad. The atmosphere was lively, with very interesting music selections in the background- re-mixes of hip-hop done slightly swanky! They are head to toe decked out with wine decor including an insanely large chandelier made of wine bottles & a dividing wall made from wine corks. The bath rooms were quite refined in their decor with a man's shaving mirror affixed to the side of the mirror over the sink. (Yes, co-ed bathrooms, I did not take a wrong turn.) All in all- excellent. And request Heather- she was great!

Instead of "You Are What You Eat" How about "You Are How You Decorate"

I'm exploring the ideas behind how the decor in your home correlates to your personality/personal life. And I was just wondering- do we, as artists/designers, make things that we, personally like? I know I do. I consciously choose to surround myself with images that I enjoy, that I would want in my home- and they are almost always so perfectly beautiful in form & color; acting as a cover-up for the yucky, messy, reality I sometimes find myself in. Comment away- and of course, send me images of your work that may relate to this subject.

For some inspiration- and a much needed break from my computer.... I hit Urban Outfitters only to stumble upon their extra 50% off sale. I picked up the below plates- 4 for $15. (and a pair of jeans...) Now- you can't tell me that the home decor world is not full of art and vice versa.

It's 7:19am and I'm already thinking about dinner

This evening I am checking out Vintage. So, I will let you know what I think later this week. But, I've been meaning to say something about food & drink- since it's my most favorite thing to spend my money on! Last week I went to BYBLOS (www.byblosphilly.com). It was my second time there- and I have to say that the food is really quite good- and if you stick to the left side of the menu (also known as tapas) and go with someone that will share with you... then you're also in for a treat on a budget! There tapas are about $5 -$7 bucks and the fattush salad is $5 and it's amazing! Now- you have to be into things like hommus, babba, feta & olives. Oh- and amazingly large and really yummy martinis. (Though our waitress mentioned that the bartender was new- as our drinks took a little while to appear. Maybe she hadn't been trained on portions yet!) The downsides- because there always are is that this place gets CROWDED and they start the DJ thing about 10pm- which in my opinion is still dinner time! So, it can get a little loud- you might not want to go there on a first date- unless you call it a night by 9:30pm. They also offers hookah and late night food until 2am on Fri & Sat. There site will tell you everything. I use to go into Candice's studio & be amazed at the paintings- 5 years since graduation & I am still floored by what she does! I hope all of you in the Boston Area check this show out- and the rest of you check out www.millerblockgallery.com and look up Candice.

6:48 am

It's early. But I hear the guys working outside of my room & now I am awake. It's still dark out- so it seems wrong that I am up. But it got me thinking, perfect time to get going on your blog. This is the result of spending endless hours on joy's blog (check it out for yourself- www.ohjoy.blogs.com) She's great, and I figure- if she has time to post then I have time to post. So this here is a screenprint that I gave to Joy for all the help she gave me with a design lesson! It is with this inaugural post that I say thanks to Joy & carry on my way!
